Sonja Barbara
Fisher
May 21, 1960 — Jul 25, 2025
Butler
A Memorial Celebration was held for Sonja Barbara Fisher on Friday, August 1, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary United Methodist Church Cemetery, 23955 Highway 10, Butler, Alabama with Rev. Clovis Snowden, Officiating.
Sonja Barbara Fisher nee' Carter was born on May 21, 1960, in Choctaw County, Alabama to the late Ellen Carter and Roosevelt Carter, Sr. She was the youngest daughter of her loving family.
After graduating from high school in 1978, Sonja attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where she left after three years to enlist in the US Navy. During her time in the Navy, she grew a love for travelling and started the roots of her own family, before being honorably discharged in 1989.
Sonja settled in Maryland with her family where she continued serving her country through government service. She joined St. John's United Methodist Church, serving as treasurer for many years, as well as spending many years on the church choir. She also formed loving and lasting friendships and never forgot to help those she could.
After her illness progressed, she retired in January 2023 and returned home to enjoy her remaining time with her friends and family. She rejoined St. Mary at this time.
Sonja loved to travel with her friends and family, and she travelled home to see her family as often as she could. She loved parties, where she could enjoy time spent with her friends. She loved terrible disaster movies and reading. Most of all, she loved her friends and family.
She took her last breath on the 25th of July 2025. Sonja was preceded by her parents, Ellen and Roosevelt Carter, Sr.; her sisters, Erma and Ola Mae, and her brother, Uncle 'T.'
She leaves to cherish her memories: her children, Christina Fisher and Eric Fisher; her former spouse, Richard Fisher; her sisters, Dorothy Raatz, Vera Mosley, Johnnie (Willie) Horn; her brothers, Nolie Carter, Roosevelt (Pamela) Carter, Carl Carter, Christopher (Betty) Carter; her special friend, Jerry Wayne Priester; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and precious cherished friends. In the last days of her life, she was tended to by her friend, Jeanette Deloach, whose care and devotion ensured she was laughing, even in her final days.
