Mattie Ruth Lassiter Gordon was born June 10th, 1945, in Lavaca Alabama. She was the eldest daughter of the late Henry M. Lassiter, Sr. and Maeola Lassiter.

She attended East Choctaw Junior High School and graduated from Choctaw County High School.

In 1966 she married Will E. Gordon of Choctaw, Alabama and that marriage lasted  over 18 years. Through that union, six children were born: Shannon E. Gordon, Shurman D. Gordon, 1st twin- baby boy and 2nd twin- baby girl (stillborn), Sharon M. Gordon and Sherrye M. Gordon.
