Funeral Service for James "Shawty" Curtis, age 76, was held Friday, June 23, 2023 at 11:00am at Gooden Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Putnam, AL with Rev. Bobby Johnson officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

James Curtis, affectionately known as "Shawty", was born November 16, 1946 in Choctaw County, AL to the late Willie P. and Lucy Mae Curtis. He departed this life at his residence on Monday, June 20, 2023. He was preceded in death by Willie P. Curtis, Sr., Lucy R. Curtis, Willie P. Curtis, Jr., and Carrie Curtis Gamble.

James attended Lisman High School. He confessed life at an early age and joined St. Mary United Methodist Church. He later moved to Putnam. James worked at Larkin & Scott Logging, Wiley Sanders Trucking Company, and Hamilton Timber. He was also a faithful member of the Putnam Volunteer Fire Department. He was united in holy matrimony to Berlean Gamble.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Berlean Curtis; one son, Brian (Shareka) Curtis; one sister, Bonnie Gaines of Lavaca, AL; one aunt, Sarah Roper of Jackson, AL; five brothers-in-law, Wilske (Lucy) Gamble, Roy (Johnnie) Gamble, Bobby (Evelyn) Gamble, all of Putnam, AL, Albert (Carolyn) Gamble of Butler, AL, Henry Gamble of Putnam, AL; three sisters-in-law, Bertha Gamble of Sweet Water, AL, Shron Gamble of Putnam, AL, Ethel (Gregory) Williams of Morvin, AL; seven grandchildren, one devoted, Shakeria Nickelson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
