Sister Annie E. Dukes Spears was born April 23, 1938, to the late Will and Sadie Bryant Dukes.She departed this life on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at her home in Pennington, Alabama.  She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Willie Curley Dukes, Sr., Walter Hubert Dukes, Grady Dukes, Sr., Sammie Dukes, Sr., John K. Dukes, and Jackie T. Carter; four sisters, Thelma Rembert, Onnie Williams, Jeanette Young Reese, and Bernice Carter.

She confessed Christ at an early age and became a member of Millwood Primitive Baptist Church in Pennington, Alabama, and remained a faithful member until her health failed.  She never gave up and always knew Jesus as her Lord and Savior.  She attended Choctaw County Training School in Lisman, Alabama.

She was united in holy matrimony to Lenton Spears, Jr. of Lisman, Alabama.  To this union, one child was born.

She worked as a factory worker and managed two auto parts businesses in Chicago, Illinois.  Annie also worked as a caregiver and a cook in Alabama.  She later retired as a cook from Choctaw County Elementary School in Butler, Alabama.  She was elected as the first Black Councilwoman for the Town of Pennington, Alabama.

She leaves to cherish her memories: one son, Byron D. Spears (Jessie) of Pennington, Alabama; one granddaughter, Ta'tanisha Rover (Chris) of Oswego, Illinois; three great-grandchildren; siblings, Leon Carter and Wilbert Carter of Pennington, Alabama; Minnie Lee Carter and Vernice Carter of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Johnny Lee President of Alexandria, Virginia; Jeffrey Walker and Jackie Walker Duncan of Jachin, Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
